Many people came to know Ettore Sottsass Jr. through the Memphis Group, but his unique design sensibilities were already evident back in the 1950s.
In 1958, he was invited by the founder of Poltronova to take on the role of Art Director, marking the beginning of Poltronova's association with Radical Design in Italy.
Radical Design transcended functional thinking, aside from being a rebellion against modernism and its aesthetics. It embraced elements of absurdity, humor, proportion distortion, and a touch of satire and kitsch in its style, often leaving people raising their eyebrows and provoking contemplation. Although only five pieces of Poltronova's Radical Design were exhibited at the time, these designs were brimming with creativity and challenge, holding unique significance regardless of the era.
